Walt Disney and Electronic Arts have today announced the penning of a multi year agreement that will see EA become the exclusive publisher of all Star Wars related video games for the foreseeable future.
A press release on the EA website states that the agreement will allow EA to “develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres” it also states that Disney have reserved the right to publish Star Wars titles in the “mobile, social, tablet and online game categories”
EA already has its fingers in the Star Wars pie, with developer Bioware having been responsible for the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO
John Pleasants, Co-President of the Disney gaming division, Disney Interactive is quoted in the release –
This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come,”
“Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”
EA Labels President, Frank Gibeau made the obvious claim that “Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” but also went on record about EA’s plans for the Star Wars licence, stating that –
“Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”
This follows the announcement that Disney have shuttered LucasArts, which they bought alongside Lucas Film last year for a reported $4.05 Billion
No financial details pertaining to the EA deal have been released.
